A short story about an unsuccessful mission to see the sunset

Due to the recent wildfires in California we were moved from our regular hotel in Pasadena down to Costa Mesa which is not in any way an upgrade but only temporary.  The fires came close to Pasadena and the hotel was being used as a base for first responders as well as people who had lost their homes.

Fires close.

Anyhoo,  Costa Mesa is just a short drive from Newport Beach and I've never been so we grabbed an Uber and headed down there.  About 15 mins into the 20 min drive there we entered the sea fog.  This is a common phenomena around the coast of the Los Angeles basin, the waters off the coast receive cold water via currents from the Gulf of Alaska and this interacts with the warmer air above and results in sea fog.  So we arrived at Newport Beach in about 50 metres visibility and it stayed that way until we left after dinner and a few beverages.   Oh well, next time.

In order to extinguish my disappointment we went to a local establishment for a couple of beverages and dinner.  I was pleased to note they served Coronitas so after dinner I ordered one.  If you are not familiar, it is a Margarita with an upturned mini bottle of Corona beer in it.  It does not sound like it would be good but it surely is.  Limit of one is recommended.

After raising my spirits we then returned to the hotel for a good nights sleep.

  1. Not your usual stopover, wildfire & heavy fog. Sounds more like a fantasy novel plot than blog. May you live in interesting times! Nice meal & drink or two always a good standby when everything else goes haywire.
